Upper Otterpool

Upper Otterpool is a small sixteenth century manor house one mile from Junction 11 off the M20 and 5 miles from the Channel Tunnel.
The house is approached by a quarter-mile drive which runes though a medieval quarry that provided the stone for Westenhanger Castle. A Saxon burial place waws discovered in the quarry about 100 years ago along with ancient artifacts; it is now an SSSI site.

In the Doomsday Book Upper Otterpool is listed as being part of the estates owned by Hugo de Montfort who came over with William the Conqueror. The house was gifted to Hugo for his services.

The house was used in both World Wars as officers' quarters for the RAF as it is next to Lympne Airfield which was a fighter station. During this time it suffered slight bomb damage to one end of the house and the interior became dilapidated.

The present owners have sympathetically restored the house and have created a garden which, although not manicured, creates a quiet haven from this busy area of Kent.
